Mark Hobbs Wing Chun

Sifu Mark Hobbs has a very traditional Wing Chun pedigree and lineage.  He learned under the expert tutelage of Sifu Lun Gai, who was Yip Man’s first student in Foshan, China, and Master Hung Nguyen, a student of Vu Ba Quy in the Yuen Chai Wan Vietnamese Lineage from Fung Siu Ching.  Very traditional, very close to ‘source’.

He has also trained with some renowned masters in Shaolin Ancestor fist, Tai Chi, Hsing-yi and Pak Mei and has experience with numerous styles of Shaolin Kung Fu.

Mark also probably has more active fighters in the cage than any other Wing Chun school. His students regularly compete in professional and amateur MMA, Boxing, K1, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

He is recognised as a leading authority on how to get Wing Chun active in the MMA cage and against modern professional combat sports, like BJJ, wrestling and Judo – an area where most Wing Chun fighters have had very little success.

In other words, he is one of the few people in the world who has managed to marry up traditional Kung Fu with success in modern combat sports. He publishes frequently on this subject and for the last 3 years has been writing a regular column for Wing Chun Illustrated magazine in the department ‘Built for Function’.

What will you learn?

Simply, you’ll learn Wing Chun taught to Mark by Master Lun Gai, who was Yip Man’s first student in Foshan China, and Master Hung Nguyen, a student of Vu Ba Quy in the Yuen Chai Wan Vietnamese Lineage from Fung Siu Ching.

In addition, we teach you how to get your Wing Chun active against modern professional combat sports, like Thai boxing, BJJ, wrestling and Judo.

Remember, you don’t need to get great at all these, unless you want to, but understanding them, where they’re coming from and what they’re trying to do will help you clean up your game massively and enable you able to deal with fighters from other disciplines.

We show you what we train and how we train.  You can take what you want, as much or as little as you want.

It’s all joined together, it’s all taught from a solid Wing Chun core as taught to Mark by his Masters.

Can you really learn to fight online?

It depends on what you do with it. If you watch videos and training lessons from your bed, not so much.

But if you treat the videos and lessons as a resource, get a training buddy, put in time on the mat, practice regularly, apply discipline, test what you’re learning, then online learning can be as good if not better than real life classes.

Why?

Because you go at your own pace and can go back over the lesson again and again in a way you just can’t in a once-a-week live class.

You can dig much deeper, you can layer-in your learning as you absorb and groove-in every point.

The downside of online learning is that you don’t have a teacher present to give you immediate feedback, but even with this, as long as you recognise and acknowledge the gap, you can resolve it.

That’s why we don’t just demonstrate technique and go over learning points in fine detail, we show you how to test if they’re working, to see if you’ve understood and applied them.

In effect, we’re showing you how to generate your own feedback and how to use that feedback as part of your Deliberate Practice to systematically and progressively grow your skills.

Our online learning is a great stand-alone resource as well as a superb supplement to private tuition and seminar work.

Issue 38

Mark writes a regular column in Wing Chun Illustrated called Built for Function

In the October issue and for the first time ever Mark shared the secret of how he integrates Wing Chun with the other fighting styles needed to compete in elite level MMA.

As a special for Wing Chun Illustrated readers, we’re sharing this video for a limited time to bring the article to life.

Where Wing Chun Excels

Wing Chun Illustrated, Issue 38

“Everyone knows that Wing Chun typically doesn’t do too well in the cage. People come up with all sort of excuses – that Wing Chun is too ‘street’, too deadly – but it’s useful to get serious and explore why.

When we first started training fighters for MMA competitions, the main difficulty we had getting Wing Chun functional was the different ranges.  We all know that Wing Chun is designed for short range combat.  That’s where it excels.

However, at the long range it’s different…  “
